You have to read this before eating figs. You’ll be surprised!
Figs are actually flowers! Did you know that? But that’s not the only surprise this delicious, sweet, aromatic, fleshy fruit has in store for us… figs hide a secret that few know: an insect lives inside them.
Figs are not fruits but inverted flowers. Fig trees don’t bloom like apple or pear trees. Their flowers open inside the pear-shaped receptacle that gives its name to what we eat.
A fig flower produces a single fruit containing a single seed and a crisp rind. Each fig is made up of multiple tiny seeds, which are themselves fruits.
But if you thought figs had a surprise in store with this new development, get ready because they have another one that’s much harder to believe.
