Italian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

Ingredients

For the Cabbage Rolls:

  • 1 large green cabbage (about 12 leaves)
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork for extra flavor)
  • ½ cup cooked rice (white or brown)
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • ¼ cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten (optional, for binding)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Tomato Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (to balance acidity)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
