Since 1976, the total number of pets has been multiplied by 2.5 in France, according to figures relayed by Icad, the national pet identification file. As a result, in 2024, the French had “16.6 million cats, 9.9 million dogs, 3.7 million birds, 3.7 million small mammals, 8.9 million backyard birds, 2.5 million terrarium animals and 29.8 million fish”, the registry listed on its official website. The cat is therefore the most represented pet in France.
