Behind the closed door: when a mother’s fear collided with the kindness of her teenage daughter….@@@

The first time I found my daughter’s bedroom door locked, I felt a disquiet that was hard to explain. Daniela was sixteen years old and had always been a quiet girl. Since she was little, she used to tell me what was happening at school, ask my opinion about her clothes, and sit with me in the kitchen while I made dinner. However, during the last few weeks, she had become distant. She would come home, rush upstairs, and stay locked in her room until nightfall. When I asked her what she was doing, she would say she was studying or talking to a friend.

At first, I thought it was just a normal phase of adolescence. Children grow up, they need privacy, and they start to keep their thoughts to themselves, thoughts they no longer share with their parents. I tried to respect her space, but soon other things started to appear that made me suspect something else was going on. Food was disappearing from the refrigerator, some blankets were missing from the closet, and Daniela started asking me for money with vague excuses. One night, I heard a noise coming from her room. It didn’t sound like my daughter’s voice. It was a low sound, like a child crying.

I stood motionless in front of the door, trying to convince myself that I had heard a video on her phone. I knocked softly and the noise stopped.

—Daniela, open the door.

There were several seconds of silence. Then I heard hurried footsteps and the sound of something being moved across the floor.

—I’m getting changed, Mom.

—I thought I heard someone.

—It’s the television.

Daniela did not have a television in her room.

I didn’t want to confront her that night. I went back to the kitchen, but I couldn’t concentrate anymore. While I was washing the dishes, I imagined all sorts of scenarios. I thought she might be talking to an older man, using something dangerous, or in some kind of trouble she didn’t know how to tell me about. I also remembered the news stories about teenagers being contacted by strangers online. Each possibility was worse than the last.
