Before cremation begins, several important checks are carried out.
The identity of the deceased is carefully confirmed to prevent any possibility of confusion. The body is also inspected for items that could create a safety risk during cremation. Certain medical devices, such as pacemakers, may need to be removed because extreme heat can cause them to rupture or explode.
The deceased is then placed in a suitable cremation container, commonly made from materials that can safely burn inside the chamber.
Entering the Cremation Chamber
The container is transferred into a specially designed cremation chamber. Temperatures can reach approximately 800–1,000°C, allowing the process to take place under controlled conditions.
The intense heat gradually breaks down the body’s soft tissues. Skin, muscles, and internal organs are affected first and are progressively transformed through the cremation process.
The process is not instantaneous. Different parts of the body respond to the heat at different rates.
What Happens to the Bones?
Bones behave differently from soft tissues because they are much more resistant to heat.
Rather than simply disappearing, they become extremely dry, fragile, and mineral-like through a process known as calcination. Once the cremation has finished and the remains have cooled, the remaining bone fragments are collected.
