The researchers developed a unique DNA molecule designed to bind to and be absorbed by macrophages. “We used this molecule as bait and attached it to a small silencing RNA molecule. Once absorbed by the macrophage, the RNA molecule specifically silences the Zeb2 gene,” Sheban explains.
This therapy was used to treat mice with bladder cancer: it was injected into the tumor area, and researchers discovered that the therapy reprogrammed macrophages to fight the tumor, and that the tumors shrank significantly.
“Now the goal is to develop this approach into a new cancer treatment for humans,” Amit concludes.
“Our study has also demonstrated how advanced technologies can provide a deep and accurate understanding of the functioning of the various actors of the immune system in different diseases, and how this knowledge has the potential to become the basis of new therapies for patients.”
