Not everyone develops every symptom. Importantly, anaphylaxis can sometimes occur without obvious skin symptoms.
Skin Symptoms Plus Breathing Problems Are a Major Warning Sign
A rash or hives alone does not necessarily mean someone is experiencing anaphylaxis.
The situation becomes much more concerning when skin symptoms occur together with problems such as:
Hives + wheezing
Hives + throat swelling
Facial swelling + difficulty breathing
Rash + fainting or severe dizziness
Sudden symptoms affecting several body systems after exposure to a possible allergen
When these symptoms appear rapidly, emergency treatment should not be delayed while waiting to see whether they disappear.
How Quickly Can Anaphylaxis Develop?
Anaphylaxis can develop rapidly after exposure to an allergen.
Possible triggers include:
- Peanuts and tree nuts
- Shellfish and fish
- Milk and eggs
- Sesame and other foods
- Medications
- Bee, wasp, or hornet stings
- Latex
- Other substances capable of triggering an individual’s immune response
The severity of a reaction can vary from one episode to another, even in the same person.
