The lesson that no one had taught him

“Do you do this every Sunday?” she asked, her voice choked with emotion.

His daughter nodded. They wanted to be sure the project was sound before discussing it.

She sat on the edge of the bed, distraught. All her assumptions crumbled. She had come looking for a problem and had found compassion.

“Sorry,” she sighed. “I should have trusted you.”

That evening, she looked at those two teenagers differently. Not as children to be watched over, but as young people already capable of taking care of the world around them.

Sometimes,   closed doors  don’t hide danger — they protect something precious that is being born.
