“No more lies, Scott! That picture shows you with a pregnant woman, smiling and happy. How can you pretend you were estranged?” I shouted.
She sighed and slumped down on the sofa. “Okay, you’re right. It’s Maya, Ella’s mother. Even though my family cut ties with her, I used to see her secretly… and help her,” she confessed.
“Why hide it? Why did you lie to me?”
“I was afraid. Afraid you would leave if you knew the truth. I wanted you to love Ella, to see her as our future… without getting dragged into the complications related to her origins,” Scott replied.
“Scott, once again, how can we build a life on secrets and half-truths?” I asked, crossing my arms. “I need your honesty, for Ella’s sake, for our sake.”
He nodded and was surprised by my next suggestion.
“Perhaps we should consider giving Ella up for adoption,” I said timidly.
“Adoption? Everly, that’s unthinkable. She’s under my responsibility,” Scott argued.
“Perhaps you should find her a loving foster family. Someone else might be a better mother than I am…”
