I couldn’t contain my frustration. “No, Scott. There’s something you’re not telling me. She’s not your niece, is she? She’s your daughter,” I accused.
Scott choked and, after several minutes of recovering, lowered his head. “Yes, Everly. She’s my daughter,” he finally confessed.
“How could you lie to me about your own daughter? How could you betray our trust like that?” I exclaimed.
“I thought that if you loved her like you loved my niece, we could eventually become a family,” he explained.
Angry and heartbroken, I demanded the truth about Maya and her past, which led Scott to reveal more about his relationship with Ella’s mother, who was not her half-sister, and about his desperation to give Ella a stable life.
“You didn’t just betray me,” I said, starting to cry. “You also betrayed your daughter by starting our marriage this way.”
I cried for days, pondering what to do. I had grown to love Ella deeply, but I didn’t know if I could stay married to a liar. After a few days, I confronted my husband again.
